A two-stage heat pump for industrial waste heat

Three institutions, one technology
DUOHEAT is carried out by a consortium of three Polish research institutions, each responsible for a distinct part of the system.
Gdańsk University of Technology
Leads the consortium and coordinates the project. Project lead: Prof. Dariusz Mikielewicz, Director of the Institute of Energy at Gdańsk University of Technology.
Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery, Polish Academy of Sciences
Develops the high-speed, oil-free, multi-stage centrifugal compressor that sits at the core of the heat pump — the component the project's temperature-lift target depends on most directly. The work runs from thermodynamic and flow analysis through rotor-dynamics and strength calculations to a prototype, full-range testing, and a machine-learning-based diagnostic system. Team: Dr Łukasz Witanowski and Dr Piotr Klonowicz (Department of Turbines, project lead), Dr Artur Andrearczyk, Dr Paweł Bagiński and Dr Łukasz Breńkacz (Department of Turbine Dynamics and Diagnostics), and Dr Jarosław Karwacki (Department of Heat Exchange).
AGH University of Krakow
Designs and selects the heat exchangers for the two-stage system, and works on the construction and optimisation of the upper heat source, using CFD simulations and metamodel-based optimisation to develop high-efficiency exchanger designs. Team: Dr Krzysztof Sornek, Karolina Papis-Frączek and Maksymilian Homa (Department of Sustainable Energy Development, Faculty of Energy and Fuels), with the work led by Dr Marcin Jankowski.
TEAM NET FENG, Foundation for Polish Science
DUOHEAT is one of eight projects selected in the second TEAM NET FENG call, a programme addressed at consortia of two or three Polish research teams working on solutions relevant to industry, health and the environment.
